Chichen Itza is always an enigmatically special place, but the spring equinox is a particularly magical moment to be there. This impressive archeological site situated in the jungle of the Yucatan Peninsula was once a great Mayan city and it is surprisingly well preserved. One of its main attractions is the step pyramid of Kukulkan (the plumed serpent) or ‘El Castillo’ (the castle) as it is more often referred to. Each year at the spring and autumn equinox, a large serpent-shaped shadow appears on the pyramid and seems to slither down the steps, to the amazement and awe of all those watching. This phenomenon lasts for several hours and continues to mystify the experts and all those who are lucky enough to view it.

Coco’s Cat Rescue in Playa del Carmen will be celebrating their third anniversary with a party and an auction at the Blue Parrot, an elegant beachfront hotel and beach club in the heart of Playa del Carmen, on Sunday March 18th, 2012. For those who can’t make it, there will be an online auction and for those who can, there will be a silent auction in the evening. Coco’s Cat Rescue is dedicated to reducing the town’s feral population through sterilization and return and also offers a free or low-cost service for those owners with limited resources. Although the main focus is on cats, the clinic also provides some sterilization services for dogs. Coco’s also does its best to find homes for cats who can adapt to domestic surroundings and to increase awareness about feral cats in order to reduce cruelty.

Cozumel lies just across the water from Playa del Carmen, from where ferries leave throughout the day. It’s a very pleasant crossing to get to Cozumel and only takes around forty minutes. Cozumel also has an international airport and you can fly there direct from some US and Canadian cities. Apparently you can also take a fifteen-minute flight from Cancun to Cozumel;
