Having visited Mayan Riviera beach destinations several times, I felt like something different, but in the same part of Mexico because I’ve always enjoyed the area and its people. So I decided to visit Merida, partly because I had heard it was a charming colonial city with a lot of history and partly because I had heard that it was a very cultural town and it was certainly time to soak up a little culture along with the sun. Also, I was looking for something a little more ‘Mexican’ in the sense of a real living city where most of the people are locals, after always hanging out with travelers and tourists at the beach destinations.
