If you are looking for the ‘other’ México, the one that is not on the beach and not tropical, but is colonial, cultural, historic, and temperate, the best place to look for it is a region called ‘El Bajío’. The region is three or four hours north of Mexico City and, within a relatively small area, includes the cities of San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, and Queretaro, among others. Queretaro is definitely the biggest, Guanajuato has the most impressive location and views, and without a doubt, San Miguel de Allende is the most charming.
